Learning sequences are suggested sets of activities that can be used to get started on learning particular LEGO concepts or content.

Learning to Build with LEGO materials
This sequence of activities introduces the basic LEGO system pieces. It's great for beginers and works well with young children. It also introduces the concept of testing and redesigning.

  1. Sturdy Wall
  2. Tower
  3. Strongest Shape
  4. Sturdy Car: The Drop Test
  5. Chair for Mr. Bear

Getting Started with the NXT
This sequence of activities can provide a very basic introduction to the NXT and programming.

  1. Going The Distance NXT
  2. Line Follower NXT
  3. Fan-tastic NXT

Learning About Gears
This sequence of activities begins with an exploration of simple hand-powered gear trains. Next, the second and third activities use gears to decrease the rotational speed of motor-powered music boxes and fans. Finally, the last three activities incorporate gears into cars so that they can win a “snail race” or climb steep ramps. This learning sequence is appropriate for third grade and above, but third grade teachers may want to choose just three or four of these activities and make sure students already have experience with LEGO™ building and programming.
An RCX or NXT is required for all but the “Exploring Gears” activity. Programming is required for the Fan-tastic and Music Box activities (unless you try “Silent” Music Boxes!). The other activities require programming only to turn motors on at a constant power level. With the RCX, this can be done without programming if you run Default Program #1 on the RCX.
