Motors and Young Children Ages: 4-8

I find it helps to keep young children (early elementary) more focused on the task at hand if they only have access to the pieces they need. For example, I usually take the motors and battery packs out of the Simple Machine kits.

For our classes, we pack special 'Bento' boxes, with only the parts that are required, and just a few extras for fun. Toolboxes with at least 16 compartments are also great for this purpose. Another thing that works well for us, is to keep activities only 5 minutes long, then move on to the next challenge. Very fast paced movement, with the fastest students earning points every 5 minutes. Score them on the white board for everyone to see.
